After an eruption in 1988, a pond was constructed to help deal with volcanic sand erosion, and when water from the river began to accumulate there something interesting happened by chance. Initially, entrance was prohibited, but in 2010 it was opened to the public and it has become a very popular tourist sight.
The blue color comes from the aluminum in the water from the nearby hot springs which reflects the color of the blue sky, and the sulfur and lime have turned the pond bed white, which further complements the blue water.
It was my first drive in Hokkaido with a new Honda - a pleasant drive at light traffic.
